Holistic Support for Dog Seasonal Allergies: A Guide to At-Home Care

We've all experienced the satisfaction of a good scratch—nothing beats the feeling of scratching an itch, and your dog feels the same way! A nice scratch here and there is perfectly normal, but if you notice your dog scratching more than usual, there could be a problem.

Constant scratching is more than just a casual annoyance. Excessive itching can disrupt routines, schedules, and sleep. It can cause discomfort that's distressing to them and you, lead to hair loss and damage to the skin layer, and can affect your dog's quality of life.

This kind of deep, frequent scratching can signal seasonal or environmental allergy sensitivities and an imbalance in your dog's immune system.

We're here to share how you can support their skin health, immunity, and healthy histamine balance at home. Read our tips for holistic care from the inside out, learn more about why dogs itch & scratch, and learn when it's time to talk to your vet.

Why Do Dogs Itch?

As mentioned above, some amount of itching is perfectly normal, just like for us! If you notice your dog plonk down for a nice, deep scratch to the ear or armpit, but they shake off happily and don't continue, you likely don't have anything to worry about.

More rigorous scratching may show up during peak shedding season (like in the spring when that heavy winter coat is coming out!) and they're feeling particularly itchy. This is also completely normal, and you'll be able to tell by the big fluffy clouds of loose fluff scattered all across your home.

Sudden, excessive itching may also signal a flea or pest problem—eek! While there are great flea repellents & treatments out there, it can be difficult to avoid them entirely. If your dog is scratching at fleas, there will be other signs:

  • Frantic biting or nibbling at themselves
  • Unexplained hair loss or redness
  • Brown spots on the skin ("flea dirt")
  • Visible identification of adult fleas

Another possible reason for frequent itching is food allergies, sensitivities, or intolerance. While true food allergies are rarer in dogs than in humans, a sensitivity to certain proteins, grains, or legumes could be causing the itchiness. If you think your dog's food may be responsible, talk to your vet. They'll be able to help you plan an allergen elimination diet for dogs to identify which ingredients might be causing the flare-up.

A surprisingly common reason for excessive scratching is environmental allergies. These may be present seasonally or year-round, depending on the specific allergens they're sensitive to and the area you live in. Dog environmental allergens can be surprisingly similar to what makes us sneeze and itch!

  • Plant pollen
  • Mold spores
  • Dust mites
  • Certain grasses
  • Insects or insect bites
  • Dander

Unfortunately, there is no "cure" or quick fix for seasonal allergies—but there are excellent ways to promote skin & coat health and help soothe some of the itching, support your dog's immunity to help calm the immune response, and boost gut health to help balance out their wellness.

Dog Supplements for Holistic Care of Seasonal Allergies

For long-term care of itchy, irritated skin caused by seasonal environmental allergies, there are many holistic ingredients that help to support your dog's wellness. Caring for their gut, immune system, and overall skin health can go a long way in helping your dog feel better, faster.

Omega-3 Fatty Acids: Strengthening the Skin Layer

Marine & fish oils are some of the most powerful sources of Omega fatty acids, particularly Omega-3s. These essential fatty acids help to strengthen skin barriers and balance inflammatory responses from the inside out.

Wild Alaskan Salmon Oil is a pure, easy-to-use source of essential fatty acids that support skin health and a shiny coat.

"She loves eating her food with this (licking her bowl clean, finally!) & it’s helping with her allergy related skin issues." -Lauren K.

Quercetin & Colostrum: Balancing the Immune Response

Both quercetin and colostrum support a strong, healthy immune response that responds more appropriately to environmental factors like allergens. Much of the unwanted effects we see of allergies—itching, sneezing, runny eyes, red paws—are due to an overly strong reaction from the immune system to a foreign substance like dust, pollen, etc.

Allergy & Itch Defense Chews are a convenient way to give both ingredients in a tasty bite, alongside Chaga mushrooms and Turmeric for extra antioxidant support.

"Within a month his hair has started to grow back, his paws are looking SOOO much better and not red, and he’s not itching or licking as much either." -Cheyenne A.

Probiotics: Supporting the Skin Through the Gut

Probiotics help to support a healthy, strong gut—and a strong gut directly supports stronger skin and a more balanced immune response. It's estimated that 70-80% of all immune cells live in the gut, so poor GI health and frequent stomach problems mean your dog's immune system can't function as well as it should.

Vet Strength Allergy & Itch Defense offers a stronger dose of probiotics than our classic formula, plus 2x more colostrum and 5x more turmeric for our most powerful support for seasonal allergies. For an even stronger boost for gut and skin health, pair Allergy & Itch Defense with K9-Specific Probiotics to give your dog total support.

"We just started this product, and I can see that my dogs have less itching and became more active." -Collen Q.

Environmental Management: Set Your Home Up for Success

It's easy to feel powerless against dog seasonal allergies, but there are actually many strategies you can use (ideally, at the same time!) to fight back and help your dog feel their best.

One easy way to reduce the effects of environmental allergens? Reduce exposure to environmental allergens! Whether your dog is sensitive to outside allergens like pollen or grass, or indoor allergens like dust mites or dander, stopping those particles from touching skin or being inhaled/ingested can be a huge help.

Use Grooming Wipes every time your dog comes inside (or 2-3 times per day, if the allergens are coming from inside the house) to help wipe away those pesky particles. By directly removing some of the allergens from the coat, face, and paws, you're already helping your dog.

If you're noticing irritated patches of skin, Skin Soother Wipes offer the best of both worlds: remove allergens and help comfort itchy skin.

You can also remove allergens from the air, by vacuuming often (with a high-quality HEPA filter) and routinely washing bedding to remove dust mites and dander. If you have the means and the space, air purifiers can be as beneficial for your dog as they are for us!

When to See Your Vet for Dog Allergies

Here's the hard part about dog seasonal allergies: sometimes, even the best, most caring at-home allergy remedies are not enough. If you're struggling to manage the symptoms of your dog's allergies, it's time to call your vet.

These are dog allergy red flags that shouldn't be ignored:

  • Persistent scratching to the point of discomfort
  • Open sores
  • Strong, foul odor coming from the skin
  • Lethargy or unexplained loss of energy
  • Bloody stool or vomiting

Your vet can help you understand treatment plans for these serious concerns. Once you've managed the immediate problem, the at-home allergy care recommended above can help maintain your dog's health, wellness, and comfort.

If you notice a bloated stomach, severe lethargy, or difficulty breathing, contact a veterinarian or emergency clinic immediately, as these could be life-threatening.

Dog Seasonal Allergies FAQs

What is the fastest way to help soothe itching?
For skin that's being affected by environmental allergens, the fastest way to help your dog feel better is with Colloidal oatmeal baths, gentle balms that comfort skin irritation, and committed environmental management to help reduce exposure to allergens.

How often should I bathe my dog with seasonal or environmental allergies?
The recommended frequency of bathing varies by coat type, environment, and individual dog. Bathing too often can strip beneficial oils from the skin and actually dry your dog out, making them feel itchier! Bathing too infrequently risks dirt, greasy oils, and allergens building up on their coat and skin. If your dog is sensitive to environmental allergens, it may be best to bathe once a week during peak allergy season but wipe their faces, paws, and coats every time they come inside from outdoor adventures to help physically remove the allergens.

Can I use human allergy meds for my dog?
It is never recommended to give OTC or prescription human medications to dogs. Drugs and antihistamines like Claritin, Zyrtec, Allegra, Flonase, and Benadryl are not approved for use in dogs. You should never give your dog human medications unless expressly advised by a veterinarian who is currently caring for your dog.
